"The Conversation Piece" es un sub-género del retrato británico del siglo XVIII, con el paso del tiempo ha llegado a definir nuestra comprensión visual y mental de como la aristocracia y las élites mercantiles se veían y se comportaban, como se relajaban y como se entretenían. Estas composiciones no eran precisamente sencillas, más bien eran complejas y llenas de matices - representaciones pictóricas informales e íntimas de personaje interactuando entre ellos y los paisajes o interiores que les rodean.
Principalmente se realizaron entre los años 1720 y 1780, y sus creador fueron algunos de los pintores más destacados de la época, entre ellos William Hogarth, Arthur Devis, Johann Zoffany y David Allan, un escocés muy atento a las sensibilidades locales del lugar y de la forma de vestir en Escocia. Otros nombres relevantes de este tipo de pintura fueron: Mercier, Highmore, Hayman, Gainsborough, Mortimer y Wheatley,

Fue Hogarth, junto con Gawen Hamilton, los que dominaron la producción de "The Conversation Piece" durante los años 1730 y 40. Hogarth no se pudo estar de hacer algo más e incluyó sutiles o incluso manifiestas críticas dentro de sus obras, obviamente atentando contra lo decoro y la jerarquía, incluso llegando a la irónica, y no muy sutil, caricatura.
